Nelson Mandela Capture Site

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” Nelson Mandela

97. Run, ride & learn at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site

📍Howick, KZN

Situated at the exact location where Madiba was apprehended before being trialed & spending 27 in jail, the Capture site consists of a commemorative exhibition, a one-of-its-kind sculpture &, most recently added, some MTB & running trails.

🥳Fun factor: the highlight was the sculpture which we viewed after our run. It’s always good to be outdoors although this 5km route only gets interesting in the second half so hang in there & you’ll enjoy the downhill & improved scenery coming home.

🏋🏾‍♀️Fitness level required: 5km & 10km trails that can be walked, run or cycled (MTB). If you’re willing to take it easy, & don’t need to be distracted by beautiful scenery to keep going, then you can manage with any level of fitness. If you’re riding the 5km or 10km route, you’ll have fun on the switchbacks in the last few kilometres. Some rocky areas make for good technical training ground for beg & int riders.

👧🏽Suitability for kids: there’s not much to keep them entertained along the trails, & while the sculpture is beautiful we’re not sure it will excite very young kids who can’t yet appreciate the significance of our history.

💸Cost: R50 to ride/run the trails, R100 for the museum and sculpture or you can choose to do only one at R50.

🤩What we loved most: The sculpture is a remarkable work of art & you’ll be captivated by the creativity & genius architectural design. The walk to the sculpture journals key milestones in Madiba’s long walk to freedom – a thoughtful and cleverly designed walkway.

🚦What you need to know: We were particularly attracted to this site thinking we’d get to run & also view the sculpture, but it seems these activities are independently managed so you pay separately. The trails, which are still a work in progress, are currently limited to a 5km and 10km route.

100 outdoors activities in 100 days – 3 more to go! 😆
